These videos were produced as part of the ‘Grassroots Visual Storytelling about Group Food-Growing’ Project. This project explores the multiple benefits and social connections from community food activities through participatory digital storytelling, and identifies and shares the most effective strategies that have been deployed during the Covid-19 crisis. The project is a collaboration between The Open University, the Cobra Collective, Sustain: The alliance for better food and farming and Reading International Solidarity Centre (RISC).

In a process of video-mediated dialogue, participatory videos were made by community researchers in Masakenarî, Guyana about traditional knowledge, its role in biodiversity conservation, and the relationship between the community and the Kanashen Amerindian Protected Area. The video was screened to the Kanashen Amerindian Protected Area Management Team, and a response video made, which was then taken back to the community for further discussion and dialogue.
In a process of video-mediated dialogue, participatory videos were made by community researchers in the North Rupununi, Guyana about traditional knowledge, its role in biodiversity conservation, and the relationship between Indigenous communities and the Iwokrama International Centre who manages the Iwokrama Forest protected area. In addition, a video was made with members of the North Rupununi District Development Board (NRDDB) who are an Indigenous organisation representing the communities of the North Rupununi. These videos were screened to the Iwokrama International Centre, and a response video made, which was then taken back to the communities for further discussion and dialogue.

This book is a visual tale of local solutions to global challenges from Indigenous communities who participated in the EU funded Project COBRA. COBRA (Community Owned Best practice for sustainable Resource Adaptive management in the Guiana Shield, South America) aimed to better understand the impacts of new global policies at the local level in a region of the world known as the Guiana Shield. The project investigated how far the priorities of global environmental policies match the aspirations of Indigenous communities to thrive in their traditional homelands in a fast changing global policy climate. COBRA supported Indigenous communities to make recommendations, based on their own understandings and observations, which will be used to facilitate the establishment of strong policies in support of community owned solutions in European international and national funding mechanisms and policies.

This review identifies good practice in traditional knowledge integration from around the world and provides recommendations for decision-makers aiming to improve the inclusion of traditional knowledge into policy and practice.
This policy review initially assesses what the level of traditional knowledge and Indigenous people’s rights integration was in Guyana up to 2017. It then reviews how the level of integration has improved in the four years (2017-2021). The first review served as the baseline and assessed the level of integration of policies, strategies, plans and, acts (hereafter referred to only as policies) in Guyana from 1999 to 2017. Since then, annual reviews were undertaken between 2018 to 2021 on the new policies published by relevant sectors in Guyana. This report brings together the results from all these reviews to illustrate the trends, patterns, and progress of integration in Guyana over four years.

This report centres on the use of scenarios in a cross-scalar analysis to help build shared understandings of potential futures. Scenarios can be used to compare the current state of a system with a number of prospective futures and provide a way for communities and other stakeholders to see how different interventions or activities may impact on people and the environment. Within the COBRA project, scenarios allow for the comparison of a wide range of international, national and local futures with a range of existing and emerging community- owned solutions.
